The redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser SUV returns to the U.S. as a smaller, less expensive overlander than the iconic Land Cruiser that Toyota phased out for the 2021 model year. It will cost between $57,445 and $76,445, including a $1,495 destination fee, when it goes on sale this spring, Toyota announced on Tuesday.
The 2021 Land Cruiser had a starting price of about $87,000 but it seated up to eight people with cargo-eating flip-out rear seats. Its venerable 381-hp V-8 complemented a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case aided by a locking center differential and off-road suspension that made it a celebrity as well as king of the overlanding hill for decades around the world.
The new Land Cruiser still rides on a body-on-frame truck platform shared with the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck and three-row Toyota Sequoia, but the boxy SUV now seats up to five passengers and comes with a hybrid powertrain. The 2.4-liter turbo-4 has an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission, which Toyota dubs the i-Force Max. That powertrain is used in larger vehicles in Toyota’s lineup, including the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup and the Sequoia full-size SUV.
In the 2024 Land Cruiser it makes 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque; the old V-8 made 381 hp and 401 lb-ft. The 2024 Land Cruiser can tow up to 6,000 pounds. It still has a full-time four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled 2-speed transfer case, but it modernizes with a limited-slip center differential that can lock and a locking rear differential. An available front stabilizer bar disconnect enables some suspension flex and articulation for off-roading.
