2025 Kia EV9 recalled for drive power loss issue

Kia is recalling 342 EV9 electric SUVs because they could lose drive power.

The small number of recalled vehicles—all 2025 models—may have rear gear drive units containing motor shafts that were improperly welded during assembly by a supplier, according to the NHTSA. As a result, the motor shaft can become damaged, which could prevent full power from getting to the wheels.

In addition to sluggish acceleration, drivers may notice abnormal driveline noise if this condition occurs, the NHTSA said. And the car may flash a “Check AWD/4WD” dashboard warning message.

Kia estimates that just 4% of the vehicles in the already-small recall population have this defect, which hasn’t been found in front drive units. And while single-motor versions of the EV9 are rear-wheel drive, the recall only covers dual-motor all-wheel-drive models. The affected vehicles are assembled at Kia’s West Point, Georgia, plant between Oct. 11, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2024.

This issue requires replacement of the rear gear drive unit, which Kia dealers will perform free of charge. Kia will also reimburse owners for any related expenses they may have already incurred.

Kia plans to mail owner notification letters starting Mar. 7. Owners can also call Kia’s customer service department at 800-333-4542 for more information or visit the automaker’s recall website. Kia’s reference number for this recall is SC337.

The EV9 launched for the 2024 model year and earned top honors as The Car Connection Best Car To Buy 2024, impressing us with its value compared to other three-row electric SUVs. The carryover 2025 model remains our favorite SUV, earning Best SUV To Buy 2025 laurels.
