  • Toyota’s hybrid system slots into CX-50 crossover SUV for 2025
  • With 219 hp, CX-50 Hybrid promises up to 38 mpg combined
  • Prices start from $31,720 for gas-only CX-50, $35,390 for the hybrid

Mazda will graft Toyota’s three-motor hybrid system on to its midsize CX-50 crossover SUV for the 2025 model year.

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid doesn’t change much on the outside or the inside with its elevation in gas mileage. A restyled front end, new wheels, and an optional red-leather interior sum up those changes.

It’s what’s under the hood that matters here, as Mazda fits the hybrid system from the Toyota RAV4 into its sleek crossover. That setup teams a 2.5-liter inline-4 with three electric motors and a battery pack mounted under the rear seats and cargo floor. With its hybrid transmission and motors, the system uses one motor to power the rear wheels when they need additional traction, for so-called “through-the-road” all-wheel drive. In all, the powertrain delivers 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque.

With its gas-electric advantage, the CX-50 Hybrid likely will deliver 38 mpg combined, according to Mazda’s estimates of official EPA ratings. It says that lifts the CX-50 Hybrid crossover to 40% better gas mileage than the gas-only CX-50 2.5 S edition.

For 2025, that gas-only model sees gains in its efficiency that boost fuel economy to 25/31/28 mpg, Mazda says.

New drive modes such as Power and Trail tune the CX-50 Hybrid’s road manners. The CX-50 hybrid will be able to tow 1,500 pounds.

For $35,390, the base CX-50 Hybrid Preferred gets a 10.3-inch touchscreen, 8-speaker audio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch wheels, wireless smartphone charging, a power tailgate, and heated front seats.

At $38,820, the CX-50 Hybrid Premium has all that plus leather upholstery, black roof rails, 12-speaker Bose audio, a panoramic sunroof, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality.

The most expensive $41,470 CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus gets cooled front seats, a 6-way power front passenger seat, a head-up display, and 19-inch wheels.

Mazda has not confirmed any CX-50 PHEV that would share its larger battery pack with the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid.

All 2025 CX-50 crossovers, hybrids and non-hybrids alike, get Amazon Alexa services for the new model year. Base prices for the gas-only CX-50 start from $31,720, and top out at $44,720 for the Turbo Premium Plus edition.
