2025 Polestar 3 EV price cut by $10,500, starts at $74,800

The 2025 Polestar 3 electric crossover arrives a year later than planned but with a price cut by $10,500 from when it was originally announced late in 2022. The 2025 Polestar 3 will cost $74,800, including a $1,400 destination fee when deliveries start in the second quarter of this year, Polestar announced Wednesday. 

Delayed by software issues afflicting it and the related Volvo EX90, the handsome electric crossover arrives with dual-motor all-wheel drive and a system output of 489 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds, according to Polestar. It has a 111-kwh battery pack and an EPA-estimated range of 315 miles. It can DC fast charge at up to 250 kw, bringing the state of charge from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes. At home with Polestar’s 11-kw onboard charger, a Level 2 240-volt source rated at 48 amps can charge the battery to full in 11 hours.  

In profile, it’s shaped like an electric hatchback in the style of the Cadillac Lyriq or Chevy Blazer EV, which were beset with their own software issues on rollout.

The Polestar 3 shares a platform with the Volvo EX90 three-row SUV, though the Swedish countrymen have grown apart in recent months. In February, Volvo stopped funding Polestar, a one-time performance arm of Volvo, that essentially enables Chinese parent company Geely to sell its interest in Volvo or the Polestar electric niche brand. Like most electric car startups, Polestar has struggled for viability since it went public in 2021. 

Yet, the brands still share much componentry. Unlike the EX90, the Polestar 3 lacks a third row, resulting in a roomy second row and large cargo area. In our walkaround back in October 2022, two 6-footers sat comfortably stacked front to back. Toe room beneath the front seat was cramped if front-seat riders preferred the lowest seating position. The fixed glass roof ate into some head room on the side.

The 2025 model comes well equipped, with a 14.5-inch touchscreen that runs on Google’s Android operating system, heated front and rear seats, a head-up display, a hands-free tailgate, and a suite of driver-assist features that include a surround-view camera system, automatic emergency braking front and rear, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control that can restart from a stop.

The $74,800 entry-level model comes with the Pilot Pack, which bundles the features listed above.

An $80,300 Plus Pack model adds a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system with “animal welfare wool” upholstery. It has heated rear seats and rides on distinct 21-inch wheels, though the estimated range doesn’t change. 

A Performance Pack available for $6,000 more on either model boosts the performance to 517 hp and 671 lb-ft, and lowers the range estimate to 279 miles, in part due to its 22-inch forged wheels. The performance software upgrade lowers the 0-60 mph time to 4.7 seconds, and Polestar says the chassis is tuned differently. 

Thus, the terribly named Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor with Pilot, Plus, and Performance Pack tops the lineup at $86,300, which is $1,000 more than the original starting price from 18 months ago. 

Built in China for the first year until production shifts to South Carolina later this year, the 2025 Polestar 3 does not qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit except on leased vehicles.
