2027 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 spied for the first time

  • The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class range is being updated, likely for the 2027 model year
  • A GLE 63 prototype is out testing with light camouflage gear only
  • A newly developed electrified V-8 is likely for the GLE 63

Mercedes-Benz is working on an update for the complete GLE-Class lineup, and the latest prototype spotted is for the high-performance AMG GLE 63 model.

Earlier prototypes revealed updated versions of the standard GLE-Class and the sporty AMG GLE 53 Coupe.

The current GLE-Class debuted for the 2020 model year and received a mild refresh for 2024. The latest prototypes indicate a second, more substantial update for the popular midsize SUV, expected to launch next year—likely as a 2027 model in the U.S.

A similar second facelift is also planned for the GLS-Class, aligning with the GLE-Class update. Prototypes of the full-size SUV are currently undergoing testing.

Mercedes typically doesn’t update its vehicles more than once during a product cycle, but this second refresh will help extend the SUVs’ shelf life. The automaker now intends to keep some of its gas-powered vehicles on the market longer than originally planned due to slower-than-expected EV adoption. While Mercedes had aimed for an all-electric lineup by 2030, in early 2024, the automaker announced it would continue selling gas-powered models beyond that date. Extending their availability allows the company to assess the EV market’s trajectory and potentially develop previously unplanned successors for some gas models.

For the updated GLE-Class, including the AMG GLE 63, camouflage on the prototypes suggests new lighting elements with integrated Mercedes star logos, new front and rear fascias, and an updated grille. Inside, concealed areas—such as the steering wheel and infotainment screen—hint at interior refinements. A key highlight will be the introduction of Mercedes’ new MB.OS software, set to debut in the 2026 CLA-Class.

Mercedes has not disclosed details about mechanical changes, but there’s a strong possibility the update will include a newly developed electrified V-8 in the AMG GLE 63, which the automaker confirmed in February. The new engine is expected to keep the current twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter format but include mild-hybrid technology and possibly even a flat-plane crankshaft.

Meanwhile, the GLE 53 Coupe will receive a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2026 model year, replacing its current mild-hybrid setup. This system pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with an electric motor, delivering a combined 536 hp—a configuration expected to carry over unchanged in the facelifted GLE 53 Coupe.
