2028 BMW 5-Series spied with Neue Klasse styling

  • BMW plans a major update for its eighth-generation 5-Series
  • Camouflaged prototypes point to the adoption of styling themes debuting with the Neue Klasse EVs
  • Technology from the Neue Klasse EVs will also be shared with BMW’s gas and plug-in hybrid models

BMW engineers are out testing prototypes of an updated version of the 5-Series.

The current 5-Series arrived for the 2024 model year and, in keeping with BMW tradition, should receive a mid-cycle refresh—or Life Cycle Impulse (as BMW calls it)—for the 2028 model year. This means the updated 5-Series will likely debut sometime in 2027. A similarly updated version of the high-performance M5 has also been spotted testing.

As the spy shots reveal, BMW’s updates for the 5-Series appear more substantial than a typical mid-cycle refresh. The camouflage suggests redesigned lighting at both ends, along with a new grille that will adopt styling cues from BMW’s Neue Klasse family of electric vehicles, which will begin rolling out as soon as this year.

The first Neue Klasse model will be a compact crossover forming part of the X3 family, likely badged as the iX3. It will be followed next year by a compact electric sedan, part of the next-generation 3-Series family, likely badged as the i3. Prototypes for both models have also been spotted testing.

The updated 5-Series will also adopt Neue Klasse technologies, including a new interface that replaces the traditional gauge cluster with a head-up display spanning the base of the windshield. Additionally, a central touchscreen will handle infotainment and various vehicle functions.

It isn’t clear what mechanical updates are planned, though powertrains will likely remain mostly unchanged. The latest 5-Series offers a diverse portfolio of powertrains, including gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric options. It’s possible that the plug-in hybrid and electric variants will benefit from the latest electric motor and battery technology debuting in the Neue Klasse lineup. One key innovation is a new cylindrical battery cell that BMW claims can boost range by up to 30% due to higher energy density.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.
