Alfa Romeo builds first customer example of modern 33 Stradale

  • The modern Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is now in production
  • The sultry supercar will be built in a run of only 33 cars
  • Power comes from a twin-turbocharged V-6 as standard but buyers can request an electric powertrain

The first customer example of the modern Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale has been completed, a little more than a year after the sultry supercar was first shown.

The car was completed on Dec. 17, the same day in 1966 that Italian designer and coachbuilder Franco Scaglione was handed the task of coming up with the design for the original 33 Stradale, of which just 18 examples were built between 1967 and 1969.

Its modern successor will be built in a run of 33 examples. All the buyers are part of an exclusive group known as Club 33, which was established at the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, where Alfa Romeo first announced plans for the supercar.

As members of Club 33, the buyers were able to meet with Alfa Romeo’s engineers and designers to help shape the development of the 33 Stradale and request any personal touches.

Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale

The 33 Stradale shares a lot in common with the MC20 supercar from fellow Stellantis brand Maserati, including its carbon-fiber chassis and 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Alfa Romeo actually started work on the car late last decade, when it planned to launch it with a different design as an 8C successor.

The 33 Stradale’s engine is a mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that Alfa Romeo says is an evolution of the twin-turbocharged V-6 found in models like the Giulia and Stelvio, rather than the engine in the MC20, which is also a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. The Alfa Romeo engine is rated at 620 hp, which matches the output of the Maserati engine. Drive is to the rear wheels only via an electronic limited-slip differential, and Alfa Romeo has claimed performance of 0-60 mph acceleration in less than three seconds and a top speed of 207 mph.

Alfa Romeo has also promised an electric powertrain for the 33 Stradale. At last year’s reveal, Alfa Romeo said the electric powertrain would deliver 750 hp. However, the automaker hasn’t said whether any of the 33 buyers have opted for it. Maserati also plans an electric version of the MC20.
