Alpine A390 Beta previews electric crossover due in 2025

  • Alpine A390 Beta concept previews second of seven EVs in the works
  • Production scheduled to start in 2025 at plant in France
  • Alpine plans U.S. arrival in 2027

French performance marque Alpine is working on seven models for launch this decade, all of them powered by batteries.

The first of these debuted in June in the form of the A290 hot hatch. The second will be an electric compact crossover called the A390, and it was previewed on Monday at the 2024 Paris auto show by the thinly veiled A390 Beta concept. Alpine said the show car shares roughly 85% of its body panels with the production model.

Both the A290 and A390 are due on sale next year in markets where Alpine currently operates. The U.S. isn’t one of the markets but Alpine plans to start sales here in 2027, likely with two larger electric crossovers.

No technical details were revealed but the A390 Beta, and the production model it will spawn, most likely uses a dedicated EV platform from the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, specifically the CMF-EV design found in the Renault Megane E-Tech and Nissan Ariya (Renault is the parent company of Alpine). The platform delivers up to 429 hp in the Ariya Nismo, and something similar may be used for the A390.

Production of the A390 will take place at Alpine’s plant in Dieppe, France. The plant is where Alpine builds its sole vehicle currently available, the A110 sports car. The current A110 will be Alpine’s last vehicle sold with a gas engine. Alpine also used the Paris auto show to unveil the A110 R Ultime, which is the final evolution of the current A110. An electric successor is planned and will be one of the seven new Alpines coming this decade.

An electric supercar is also part of the plans, possibly with styling cribbed from Alpine’s Alpenglow Hy6 concept that was also on show in Paris. Another Alpine in the pipeline is a four-door sedan or liftback to be called the A310.

The names of Alpine’s modern vehicle all feature an A that stands for Alpine, followed by three-digit number. The first digit signifies the vehicle’s size and positioning, while the remaining two digits signify the vehicle as either a sports model or more practical lifestyle model.
