A defect in as many as 720,796 BMW vehicles from the 2010s has led to an extensive recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week recalled BMWs fitted with a certain water pump and plug connector. In affected vehicles, the pump’s electrical connector may not have been sealed properly, which could lead to water intrusion—which then could lead to a short-circuit and an increased risk of fire.
BMW will contact owners by mail, with letters to be sent by Oct. 4. Owners may also contact BMW directly at 1-800-525-7417. BMW’s service network will be charged with inspecting the water pump and connection, and replacing any faulty parts free of charge. A protective shield will also be fitted.
Drivers can also reach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit the NHTSA website.
