BMW recalls 105,588 vehicles due to starter motor failure

BMW is recalling 105,588 vehicles across a variety of model lines due to potentially faulty starter motors.

The recall includes: 2019 and 2020 BMW X5 (sDrive40i and xDrive40i), 2020 BMW X6 (sDrive40i and xDrive40i), 2019 and 2020 BMW X7 (xDrive40i), 2020 and 2021 BMW 7-Series (740i and 740xi), 2020 BMW 8-Series coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe (840i and 840xi), and 2020 BMW 3-Series (M340i and M340xi) models. All of these vehicles have inline-6 engines.

The common issue with these vehicles is an engine starter that may have been damaged, which could cause it to stop functioning, according to the NHTSA. If drivers repeatedly attempt to start their vehicles with one of these faulty starters, an electrical overload could occur, which could lead to overheating and increase a fire risk due to flammable materials in the engine compartment that could come into contact with an overheated starter, such as acoustic insulation.

BMW said in recall documents that it is aware of approximately 12 customer complaints related to this issue, including some reports of heat damage in the engine compartment. But the automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Affected vehicles will receive a software update that prevents the starter from being electrically overloaded. This must be performed at a dealership, and BMW plans to mail notification letters with instructions for setting up appointments Sept. 23, 2024. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or visit BMW’s recall page.

This recall comes shortly after BMW recalled over 290,000 X3 crossover SUVs, but not for an issue related to the powertrain. Instead, this recall of BMW’s bestselling U.S. model addresses interior cargo rails that could detach during a crash.
