BMW recalls 80,000 new models for loss of braking power

BMW has recalled many of its new models from the 2023-2024 model year for a potential loss of braking power that could increase the risk of a crash, the NHTSA disclosed Monday.

In certain vehicles, the power braking assist function could malfunction and unexpectedly require the cars to need more stopping distance. Additionally, the issue could cause a malfunction in the antilock braking system as well as the electronic stability control system. The loss of those systems could affect vehicle handling and control.

The mechanical brakes work fine, so the affected cars can brake and come to a stop. But owners and operators used to the brake assist function that works in tandem with the mechanical brakes could be surprised by a loss of brake pedal feel.

The recall encompasses 79,670 units of the following vehicles:

2024 BMW 530i

2023-2024 BMW 740i and 760i

2024 BMW 750e

2024 BMW i5

2023-2024 BMW i7, i7 M70

2023 BMW X1

2024 BMW X5

2024 BMW X6

2023-2024 BMW X7

2023-2024 BMW XM

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre

In addition to a change in braking distance, drivers may notice a warning light or error message in the instrument cluster.

Owners and lessees will be notified by mail by April 5 to take their cars into a BMW or Rolls-Royce service center to have the integrated brake system replaced. It will cost nothing but time since the vehicles are under warranty. For more info, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls Royce customer service at 1-877-877-3735, or visit BMW’s recall website.
