Bugatti W16 Mistral Caroline: A One-Off Hypercar

The Bugatti W16 Mistral marks the end of an era—the legendary W16 engine—and does so with one of the most extreme and finely executed interpretations ever produced. In the “Caroline” specification, the open-top roadster becomes something beyond pure engineering: a bespoke commission where technology and craftsmanship blend to the point of approaching art.

This one-off was created through the Sur Mesure program, which allows each client to turn their car into a truly unique build. In the case of “Caroline,” the starting point was deeply personal: paying tribute to the owner’s daughter, translating emotion and sensibility into shapes, colors, and materials.

Floral Inspiration Meets Haute Couture

The design of the Bugatti W16 Mistral Caroline took shape between Molsheim and the Berlin Design Studio under the direction of the Color & Material Finish team. Inspiration comes from the world of flowers and high fashion, with nods to the lavender fields of Provence and Parisian gardens. The visual language is delicate—built on balance and lightness—but also driven by an obsessive attention to detail.

The result is immediately evident in the bodywork, finished in a bespoke “Lavender” paint developed specifically for this car. After numerous tests and samples, the team arrived at a shade that shifts with the light, moving between bluish violet and warmer highlights. The surface becomes dynamic, emphasizing the Mistral’s sculpted forms.

In contrast, the lower section is finished in exposed “Violet Carbon,” a tinted carbon fiber that adds depth and visual structure to the design.

A Rolling Work Of Art

The floral theme becomes even more pronounced at the rear of the Bugatti Mistral. The retractable wing turns into a true canvas: a hand-painted composition with lilac and iris gradients, applied through a complex process of successive masking stages. At the center sits the name “Caroline,” tying the entire project to its most intimate meaning.

The technicians’ work is exceptionally meticulous: each layer of color is applied and protected with millimeter-level precision, ultimately creating a three-dimensional effect that fully reveals itself only when the air brake is deployed.

An Interior Where Craftsmanship Tells The Story

Inside the Mistral, the same philosophy is expressed through materials and execution. “Blanc” and “Minuit” leather, purple accents, and carbon fiber create a refined cabin that remains consistent with the exterior. The floral motif returns in the embroidery, created with thousands of stitches and layered techniques to add depth and movement.

The headrests feature mirrored compositions hand-stitched, while the door panels display petals that appear to move as if carried by the wind. Here, too, nothing is accidental: every element echoes the dynamism that defines Bugatti’s design language.

At the center of the cabin, the gear selector houses Rembrandt Bugatti’s iconic “Dancing Elephant,” enclosed in tinted glass that mirrors the project’s overall palette—creating a bridge between artistic tradition and innovation.

A Definitive Expression Of Sur Mesure

The Bugatti W16 Mistral “Caroline” is the clearest demonstration of what extreme personalization can mean. It isn’t simply about choosing colors or materials, but about building a coherent narrative where every detail contributes to a singular identity.

In that sense, the hypercar is not only the final chapter in the Bugatti W16 story, but also a statement of intent: when engineering meets personal vision, the result can go beyond the concept of an automobile, transforming into a work of art on wheels.
