EU to launch Entry/Exit System on Oct 12 for non-EU travellers, ETTravelWorld

The European Union will launch its long-awaited Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025, marking a major milestone in Europe’s digital border management strategy. The system will register non-EU nationals travelling for short stays across 29 participating European countries, replacing the traditional practice of manually stamping passports.

The EES will automatically record travellers’ names, travel document details, biometric data (including fingerprints and facial images), and the time and place of entry and exit. It will also register refusals of entry. The system, developed and managed by the EU Agency for Large-Scale IT Systems (eu-LISA), will be gradually rolled out over a six-month period at the external borders of the participating states.

Once fully operational, from 10 April 2026, the EES will replace manual passport stamping entirely, enabling border authorities to detect overstayers automatically — individuals who exceed their authorised duration of stay within the Schengen area.

The new system aims to prevent irregular migration and enhance security across Europe while improving the travel experience for non-EU visitors. By facilitating automated border control and self-service options, it is expected to speed up processing times and strengthen safeguards against identity and document fraud.

European Union will launch its digital border control, Entry/Exit System, on October 12, 2025. The system will record data of non-EU nationals entering the Schengen area. This impacts Indian passport holders. Biometric data collection will be phased. The system aims to improve border management. Travellers should expect longer wait times.

Officials say the EES represents a key step towards smarter and safer borders. It forms part of the European Union’s broader Security Union framework, contributing to both the European Agenda on Security and the European Agenda on Migration, particularly in areas of border management and the prevention of cross-border crime and terrorism. The European Commission first proposed the EES in April 2016 as part of the revised Smart Borders Package. Following negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council, the regulation was adopted in November 2017 and entered into force the following month. In December 2024, the Commission proposed a progressive launch to ensure a smooth transition across all member states, a move formally endorsed by the European Parliament and the Council in May 2025.

With the system’s launch confirmed for 12 October 2025, the EU is set to enter a new era of digital border management — one designed to balance security, efficiency, and the protection of travellers’ rights.
