Ford Racing Teases a ‘Production Road Car’ for 2026. Could It Be a New GT?

Outside of a few special editions that have trickled out over the last few years—like the pricey Mk IV—the second-generation Ford GT effectively ended production in 2022. After six successful years, Ford retired its flagship two-door performance car, offering no sign that a successor was in the works.

That could soon change. Ford announced today that its newly rebranded Ford Racing division is getting ready to unveil an entirely new “production road car” early next year. Could the GT be making a comeback? It’s unclear for now, but we’ll find out more when the new vehicle debuts in January.

Details remain scarce, but Ford described the upcoming model as “a testament to how deeply we’re integrating our racing innovation into the vehicles you drive every day.” That suggests a road car with serious track-inspired performance—and likely plenty of horsepower to boot.

If this turns out to be a new Ford GT, it would mark the third generation of the modern GT nameplate, following the 2005 debut of the first generation and the 2017 launch of the second. Still, Ford could have other plans in mind.

There are rumors that Ford is testing a more extreme Mustang GTD as the company goes toe-to-toe with the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X for the Nürburgring record. Another possibility is the 1,000-horsepower electrified off-roader previously hinted at by CEO Jim Farley.

Whatever Ford has up its sleeve, all will be revealed on January 15, 2026.
