Ford recalls nearly 300,000 heavy duty diesel trucks

Diesel trucks prefer to work, at least that’s what the latest Ford recall suggests.

Ford Super Duty diesel pickup trucks that sat idle during the pandemic may have a fuel pump that failed due to aged biodiesel fuel deposits. A failed fuel pump could lead to a loss of engine power, making the work trucks idle in an even worse way than economically.

Biodiesel sitting in the tank and the pump can, over time, cause increased wear on the pump parts once the engines are back in service. Operators may notice longer crank times on start up, a check engine light, more noise than usual, and reduced engine power.

The recall encompasses 295,449 heavy duty trucks equipped with Ford’s 6.7-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel engine. The recalled models include the 2020-2022 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600 Super Duty, as well as the 2021-2022 Ford F-650 and F-750 truck platforms used on buses and other heavy duty applications. The fuel pump in question was supplied by Bosch

In 2022, at the request of the NHSTA, Ford determined that the source of the failed fuel pumps was aged biodiesel fuel sitting in tanks for extended periods of time during the economic slowdown caused by the Covid pandemic.

Since the first reported problem in October 2019 through November 2024, Ford has attributed 3,070 warranty reports and 498 field reports to the diesel fuel pump issue.

The remedy seems easy enough. Owners will be notified by mail as early as Jan. 13, 2025, to bring their trucks into a Ford or Lincoln service center for a software reflash of the powertrain control module. Ford says this will increase pump cooling that will prevent the formation of aged biodiesel deposits. Reimbursement will be provided for owners who have paid to have the fuel pump fixed.
