Germany Attracts Growing Indian Visitors with Cultural and Culinary Experiences in 2026, ETTravelWorld

Germany recorded continued growth in Indian visitor arrivals during the first five months of 2026, with overnight stays by Indian travellers reaching 350,488 between January and May, up 0.1 per cent year-on-year. Overall, Germany registered 174.9 million overnight stays during the period, a 1.3 per cent increase over the previous year, while international overnight stays remained stable at 28.7 million. The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) India said the figures reflect Germany’s resilience as a preferred destination despite ongoing geopolitical challenges affecting global travel. Domestic tourism has also surpassed pre-pandemic 2019 levels, highlighting sustained demand. To build on this momentum, GNTO India has announced four key themes that will shape its tourism promotion strategy for the Indian market in 2026 – culture, cities, cuisine, and family, friends and nature.Commenting on the strategy, Romit Theophilus, Director – Marketing & Sales Office, India, GNTO, said, “Despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty across the world, Germany continues to hold its own as a stable and dependable travel destination, and India remains one of the markets driving that momentum. What we’re witnessing is a clear shift in how Indian travellers engage with Germany; they’re spending more time, going deeper into a region, and choosing experiences that connect them to a place rather than simply passing through it.”One of the cultural highlights for 2026 will be the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre, celebrating the legacy of composer Richard Wagner through performances and experiences across Germany’s cultural institutions.Germany will also promote its major cities, including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt, showcasing cultural attractions, innovation hubs and urban experiences. Berlin is expected to benefit from major exhibitions, new entertainment offerings and preparations for the reopening of the Pergamon Museum in 2027.The tourism board will further position Germany as a culinary destination by highlighting its 13 wine-growing regions, nearly 5,000 beer varieties, traditional bakeries and seasonal food festivals. Nature-based tourism will focus on cycling routes, wine trails and outdoor experiences aimed at families and multigenerational travellers.GNTO India said it will support these themes through trade partnerships, influencer collaborations and destination campaigns focused on regional experiences. The organisation expects the strategy to strengthen Germany’s appeal among Indian outbound travellers seeking longer stays and immersive travel experiences.
