General Motors is looking at ways to add quad-motor powertrains to its electric vehicles, with a focus on performance both on and off-road.
In a patent filing published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Nov. 21, 2024, and filed by GM May 17, 2023, the automaker discusses use of a mechanical coupling to allow two electric motors to drive the same axle.

The coupling would allow both motors to be locked together, potentially via a clutch pack, according to the filing. This would help deliver maximum torque across a wider variety of scenarios, GM notes.
For example, when off-roading on low-traction surfaces or with one wheel off the ground, the combined torque of both motors could be sent to the wheel with the most grip, GM says. Alternatively, GM says that on pavement,”directional stability may be improved at straight-line launch, which may result in improved 0-60 performance, and at high speed, which may mitigate excessive steering sensitivity.”

The patent filing discusses using pairs of motors on the front or rear axles of an EV, allowing for a quad-motor powertrain. GM currently offers a tri-motor powertrain on the GMC Hummer EV, with a single front motor and dual rear motors, but with electronic rather than mechanical controls for the rear motors.
Among other automakers, Rivian offers a quad-motor powertrain in its R1S and R1T, while BMW has been publicly testing its own version since 2022. Expected to deliver a peak of 1,341 hp in some applications, BMW’s quad-motor powertrain will likely be used in an electric M3 sports sedan.
