GM recalls 132,037 pickups due to faulty power tailgates

General Motors is recalling 132,037 Chevrolet and GMC heavy-duty pickup trucks because their tailgates might open unexpectedly.

The recall includes only models with power-unlatching tailgates, which contain an electronic gate-release switch that may short circuit from water intrusion, according to a NHTSA disclosure on Tuesday. This can cause the tailgate to become unlatched while a truck is in Park. If driver’s don’t check that the tailgate is secure before setting off, it could open and allow cargo to fall out of the bed, the NHTSA noted.

The recall encompasses 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models, as well as 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models. GM said it its not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the defect, which the automaker estimates that 1% of the recall population actually has. GM also recently recalled earlier versions of these trucks, from model years 2021 and 2022, for transmission issues.

The automaker told the NHTSA that it’s aware of 237 complaints of tailgates unlatching “while driving,” but said the tailgates in question likely unlatched while vehicles were in Park and then opened later. Software logic prevents the release of the tailgate latch while trucks are in Drive or Reverse, GM said.

The fix is a replacement of exterior touchpad switch assemblies for the affected tailgates, which dealers will do free of charge. The replacement parts use a new material that better resists water intrusion. GM will also reimburse owners who may have had related work done at their own cost. Until recall work is completed, GM is asking owners to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

GM plans to mail owner notification letters Jan. 13, 2025. Owners can also contact Chevy customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 or visit GM’s recall page. GM’s reference number for this recall is N242469160.
