General Motors is recalling 70,768 GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup trucks due to disintegrating grilles.
The recall is specific to 2022 models equipped with chrome grille deflectors introduced partway through that model year. Sierra 1500 trucks built earlier in the model year are not included in the recall, nor are models without these specific chrome pieces, or heavy-duty Sierra 2500 and 3500 models. Some of those trucks were just recalled for faulty power tailgates, though, which in turn followed a recall for transmission issues.
The attachment points that hold the front upper grille deflector in place may fracture over time, according to the NHTSA. Eight of these points attach the deflector to the rest of the grille, and if they all fail the deflector can fall off while driving, the agency said, adding that drivers may notice a rattle if the deflector is starting to come loose.
Pieces of grille falling off a vehicle unexpectedly while driving can increase the risk of a crash, the NHTSA said. Indeed, GM told the agency that it is aware of four allegations of crashes related to this problem, but none that resulted in injuries.
A remedy is still in the works, but once it’s ready GM will have owners bring their trucks to dealerships to have any necessary repairs or replacement of parts done free of charge. It will also reimburse owners who have already paid out of pocket for any related work on their vehicles.
