Goa’s Tourism Minister Advocates for Aviation and Cultural Tourism Enhancement, ET TravelWorld

Goa’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte held strategic meetings with two key Union Ministers on Tuesday, seeking federal support for expanding the state’s aviation connectivity and developing what officials termed a “concert economy” tourism model.

The discussions, held with Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, centered on addressing connectivity challenges that tourism stakeholders say are hampering Goa’s growth as a year-round destination.

Aviation connectivity concerns
In his meeting with the Civil Aviation Minister, Khaunte highlighted ongoing issues with domestic route economics and international connectivity gaps. The Goa minister specifically raised concerns about airline pricing structures on domestic routes, arguing that current pricing affects the state’s competitiveness in attracting sustained tourist traffic.

“The discussions addressed the critical need for expanding international direct connectivity to Goa and improving the viability of domestic routes,” according to a statement from the Goa Tourism Department.

The state is pushing for increased direct international flights from key source markets, while also seeking solutions to make domestic routes more economically viable for airlines.

Goa’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte revealed plans to introduce a scheme for countries or airlines that attract high-spending international tourists. He announced mandatory data uploads by hotels on the ‘TIME’ software from April 1. Despite negative claims, Goa saw a surge in domestic and international tourists last year, focusing on markets like Poland and Kazakhstan.

Experience-Driven Tourism Model
With the Union Tourism Minister, conversations focused on what Goa officials describe as developing a “concert economy” – a tourism approach emphasising immersive and experience-driven offerings rather than traditional leisure models. The strategy involves leveraging Goa’s cultural assets, including its heritage sites, festivals, and spiritual tourism potential, to position the state as a destination for “authentic and high-value tourism.”

“Goa is not just a destination; it’s a cultural emotion. By building a concert economy and strengthening aviation linkages, we aim to make Goa globally accessible while preserving its soul”, said Khaunte after the meeting. “Our discussions today reflected a shared commitment between the Centre and the State to work together on building a tourism framework that is experiential, sustainable, and globally connected.”

Both ministers reportedly expressed interest in developing tourism infrastructure that reflects Goa’s cultural identity while maintaining sustainability standards.

The meetings come as Goa’s tourism sector faces pressure to diversify beyond its traditional beach tourism model. Industry observers note that the state has been working to extend its peak season and attract different tourist segments.

The discussions reflect broader efforts by state governments to work with federal authorities on tourism infrastructure development, particularly in addressing connectivity challenges that affect destination competitiveness.
