How Can I Tell If Someone Drove My Car?

A man went viral on TikTok after accusing his mechanic of some shady behavior—alleging the worker took his car out for a personal spin.

User @gelsadas02 reported that he had dropped off his Dodge for service but later saw the mechanic behind the wheel, taking his family to church.

“Just saw my mechanic and his whole family going to church in my car,” the TikToker wrote in the on-screen caption of his video. In his video’s caption, he added, “This is crazy,” followed by a string of laughing emojis.

No other details were shared, so it’s unclear how long the Dodge was in the shop or whether @gelsadas02 confronted the mechanic. Still, the clip struck a nerve with viewers, many of whom said they would’ve followed the worker right into the pews. As of this writing, the video has over 85,600 views.

Can a Mechanic Take My Car Home?

Usually not. According to one local car repair garage, a mechanic cannot take your car without your explicit permission, and doing so could be considered unauthorized use or theft, which may breach your agreement with the shop. They’re only allowed to drive it during diagnosis or to verify repairs, and they should inform you first.

If you’re concerned, there are simple steps you can take to address the issue. Before dropping off your vehicle, ask about the shop’s policy on test drives and whether cars are kept overnight. Better yet, record your mileage before handing over your keys—or take a photo of your car’s odometer. Then, when the vehicle is returned to you, if you notice anything suspicious (e.g., unexpected toll charges or mileage discrepancies), you can call the shop and request clarification.

Mechanics can take your car for a test drive if necessary for diagnosing or confirming a repair, and they can move it around the lot or onto a lift as needed. Ultimately, though, you have the right to set clear boundaries on how your vehicle is used. If a mechanic exceeds these boundaries, you can push back and even take legal action.

Viewers Urge Driver to Confront Mechanic

After watching @gelsadas02’s video, many viewers were stunned that a mechanic would be bold enough to take a customer’s car off the lot—let alone use it to carpool his family around.

“Extra key and he and his family would have walked home,” one user said.

“I would have gotten my spare key and had my boy come get the car and take it away,” another wrote. “Then go back into the church like nothing happened. On Monday, go to the mechanic for an update on your vehicle.”

Some said they would’ve confronted the mechanic right then, even if it meant walking into the church.

“The way I would have walked into that church, demanded my keys, and left in my car! I’d let the congregation know he is misusing his customer’s property,” one woman said. “Then I would file a lawsuit because you’re probably not the only one!”

“I’d sit next to him [in] church,” another joked.

“I’d be in the church and tell him to give me my key and take it somewhere else,” added a third. “And I would be loud about it to embarrass him.”

Others shared their own stories about mechanics who used their cars without permission.

“I took mine to the shop for brakes. Got it back 150 miles later,” one said.

“A lot of small mechanics do this,” another claimed. “Y’all stay safe, though.”
