DC recorded an unprecedented 27.2 million visitors in 2024, up by 5 per cent from the previous year, according to new data released by Destination DC (DDC). This figure included 25 million domestic and 2.2 million international visitors. India emerged as the top-spending international market, contributing USD 344 million and ranking third in volume after Canada and the United Kingdom.

The visitor influx generated USD 11.4 billion in direct spending, an increase of 12 per cent year-on-year. Tourism supported 111,500 jobs and brought in USD 2.3 billion in tax revenue. According to DDC, this economic impact translates into a saving of USD 3,608 in taxes for each DC household. Domestic business travel accounted for 30 per cent of domestic visits, with a 7 per cent rise from 2023.

The data follows the first full year of Destination DC’s expanded tourism promotion efforts funded by the Tourism Recovery District (TRD). An independent study highlighted a return of USD 2.09 in tax revenue for every USD 1 spent on marketing in 2024. Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO of DDC, noted the economic significance of tourism and stressed the need to maintain momentum amid changing global trends.

International visitors made up only 8 per cent of arrivals but accounted for 27 per cent of total spending, reflecting their longer stays and higher expenditures. However, Tourism Economics forecasts a 6.5 per cent decrease in international travel to DC in 2025, compared to a national average decline of 9.4 per cent .

Major international events such as the FIFA Club World Cup and WorldPride DC 2025 are expected to sustain interest in the destination. Looking ahead, DC is preparing for a year-long celebration marking the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. The commemorations will include city-wide cultural programming, upgrades to national landmarks, and several new museum openings.

The figures were announced at the annual Travel Rally hosted by DDC and the U.S. Travel Association at Nationals Park, further highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a sporting and cultural hub.
