Jeep Gladiator 4xe Plug-In Hybrid

Significant changes are happening at Stellantis. The automaker has new leadership that is attempting to salvage a lackluster product portfolio, which includes canceling projects. The Ram brand has already killed the electric 1500 REV, and now the automaker is canceling the long-promised Jeep Gladiator 4xe hybrid.

A Stellantis spokesperson said in a statement shared with Motor1:

‘As customers’ propulsion preferences for battery-electric trucks continue to evolve, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified Gladiator variant in the Jeep lineup.’

Jeep announced back in early 2021, just as the Wrangler 4xe went on sale, that it would electrify its entire lineup “in the next few years.” It would introduce the Grand Cherokee 4xe later that year for the 2022 model year, but that was it.

Jeep reaffirmed its commitment to a hybrid Gladiator in September 2023, with former brand boss Jim Morrison confirming the hybrid remained in development. Less than a year later, in May 2024, Antonio Filosa, now the CEO of Stellantis, announced that a Gladiator 4xe would arrive sometime in 2025.

But that’s no longer the case. Instead, Jeep is already “reinvesting funding to ensure the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator,” which includes “even more customer-requested factory features, customization, and additional powertrain options in the near future.”

Those “additional powertrain options” likely include a V-8 for the Gladiator.

Bob Broderdorf, Jeep’s latest boss, said in August:

“Jeep fans, don’t worry, the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, will have a home at Jeep. We will extend the availability of the 392 Wrangler, and in fact, we will tap the power and performance of the Hemi across Jeep products as new projects are already underway.”

Jeep’s Hybrid Success

The Wrangler became Jeep’s first plug-in hybrid in 2021. The Grand Cherokee 4xe launched a year later, and Jeep has touted the sales success of both.

So far this year, Wrangler 4xe sales jumped 38 percent in the second quarter over the first, and Grand Cherokee 4xe sales were up eight percent quarter to quarter. In the first three months of 2025, hybrids made up about 25 percent of total Wrangler and Grand Cherokee sales.

Last year, Jeep sold 55,554 Wrangler hybrids, accounting for 37 percent of the model’s total sales. Thirteen percent of Grand Cherokees sold last year were hybrid.
