Kia Soul, Seltos recalled again due to increased risk of fire

Kia is recalling 137,256 small utility vehicles because of an engine issue that could lead to stalling and, in rare cases, fires.

The recall includes 2021-2023 Kia Seltos and Kia Soul models. The engines in these vehicles may have piston oil rings that were manufactured incorrectly, resulting in damage to cylinder walls over time, according to the NHTSA.

This condition can lead to increased oil consumption over time. If an engine isn’t sufficiently lubricated with oil, it can lose power or seize due to internal components heating up and deforming under increased friction. Oil leaks are also possible, which could lead to fires if oil comes in contact with hot exhaust components, the NHTSA noted.

Warning signs include the need to top off oil more frequently, abnormal engine noises, and an illuminated oil pressure warning light on the dashboard.

Kia conducted a recall of both the Seltos and Soul in 2021 for a similar issue, encompassing 2021 Seltos and 2020-2021 Soul models. The automaker said it was aware of four fires prior to that recall, but no related injuries or crashes. Kia told the NHTSA that it was aware of four more fires that might be related to the new recall, but still without any known injuries or crashes.

And as with that previous recall, Kia dealers will inspect engines and replace them if necessary. They’ll also install piston ring noise-sensing software to monitor for any potential issues in the future. All of this work will be done free of charge, and Kia will reimburse owners for any related expenses they might have incurred.

Kia plans to mail owner notification letters starting Apr. 4. Owners can also call the automaker’s customer service department at 800-333-4542 or visit Kia’s recall site with any questions. Kia’s reference number for this recall is SC336.
