‘Magic Bus:’ This VW Bus Somehow Survived the California Fires. Now It’s Been Fully Restored

Last year, when the Palisades Fire tore through Southern California, a white-over-blue Volkswagen T2 somehow (mostly) survived. It became a beacon of hope, and once the automaker learned about the bus, it pledged to fix it. Now, VW has restored it and is ready to show it off to the public.

According to the automaker, the T2 needed significant work, including mechanical fixes. The fire burnt the exterior, peeled the paint, and melted a turn signal cover. The restoration process required VW to replace or repair over 900 parts, and the project took more than 2,000 hours to complete.

Photos of the “magic bus” revealed a lot of its damage, but despite that, it was clearly worth saving.

Complicating the restoration process was the fact that previous owners had modified the bus, and it lacked some of its original parts. Volkswagen struggled to find several components, including the factory-option clock, a new-in-box side aerial antenna, and replacement fabric for the window shades.

Volkswagen restored the bus at its Oxnard, California, facility, where VW Group of America houses its historical vehicles. The automaker partnered with GE Kudensport, which restores historic Porsches, to complete the bodywork restoration.

The van, made famous by an Associated Press photo capturing the white-over-blue T2 standing out against the charred destruction of its surroundings, makes its public appearance at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. The owner, Megan Weinraub, named the car Azul, and it’ll be on display at the show through November 30.

VW collaborated with Candylab to create a limited-edition wooden collectable version of the restored van, nicknamed “Azul,” which is Spanish for blue. The little van is only available at VW’s LA Auto Show booth, while supplies last. Once the LA show is over, the van will head to the Petersen Automotive Museum for an exhibition running from December 4 to January 11.
