Mercedes launches Mythos series with AMG PureSpeed

  • Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG PureSpeed as the first model in its new Mythos series of low-volume special editions
  • The AMG PureSpeed is based on the SL 63 and shares that car’s 577-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8
  • Production of the AMG PureSpeed will be limited to 250 units worldwide

Mercedes-Benz has formally introduced its Mythos series, a new line of limited-edition masterpieces, debuting with a stunning speedster inspired by the AMG SL.

The car, capped at 250 units globally, was first previewed in May with the PureSpeed concept. Both the concept’s name and its striking design have been carried through to production.

Revealed on Saturday during the 2024 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the PureSpeed is a true speedster, entirely devoid of a roof and windshield, just like the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss launched more than a decade ago. For occupant safety, designers have integrated a halo protection system akin to that used in Formula 1. Made from steel instead of F1’s carbon fiber, the halo protects occupants’ heads by deflecting large objects. The PureSpeed also includes dual rollover hoops positioned behind the seats.

Small wind deflectors ahead of the cabin guide airflow over the heads of the driver and passenger, but helmets are still required for speeds beyond city limits. To complement the car, AMG offers matching helmets equipped with a communications system, enabling clear conversation between occupants at high speeds. Smartphones can also pair with the system for phone calls or enjoying your favorite playlist. When the vehicle is not in use, a cloth is designed to fit over the cabin to protect it from the elements.

The PureSpeed is built on the SL 63 model from the latest SL lineup. It boasts that car’s 577-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and all-wheel-drive system. The sole transmission is AMG’s 9-speed automatic, which features a wet starting clutch instead of a traditional torque converter for weight savings and sharper response. Performance figures include a 0-62 mph sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph.

Other elements borrowed from the SL include a front-lift kit, rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic brake rotors. AMG’s Active Ride Control suspension, which features hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive dampers, is also included. The wheels measure 21 inches and feature carbon-fiber covers to reduce turbulence. Active aerodynamic features are also incorporated into the car, including components underneath.

The front of the car features a more pronounced nose compared to the standard SL, which Mercedes said was inspired by the design of the AMG One hypercar. Also unique to the design is the paint fade which incorporates hand-painted AMG logos. Inside the concept, there’s bespoke trim as well as a custom dash-mounted clock designed by watch company IWC Schaffhausen, a partner of Mercedes. Designers also fitted a 15-speaker Burmester audio system and a center console badge that reads “1 out of 250” to highlight the car’s exclusivity.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t announced pricing for the PureSpeed. The automaker also hasn’t said whether the car will be available in the U.S.
