Mumbai airport handles over 13.46 million passengers in Q1 FY24, ET TravelWorld

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai (CSMIA) has announced a strong performance in passenger traffic for the first quarter of FY2024-25, recording a 7 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. The airport handled over 13.46 million passengers in Q1 FY2024-25, up from 12.49 million in Q1 FY2023-24.

From April to June 2024, the airport saw 3.7 million international and 9.7 million domestic travellers. May 18, 2024, set a new record with 163,166 passengers in a single day. This bustling period saw high traffic volumes and key airline performances, highlighting CSMIA’s role as a major aviation hub.

April 2024 kicked off with 4.3 million passengers, followed by a 7.9 per cent jump in May to 4.7 million, and June concluded with 4.39 million passengers. Over this period, CSMIA handled 59,775 domestic flights and about 21,519 international flights.

Among domestic routes, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad topped the list with over 6.9 million passengers combined. Internationally, Dubai led with over 617,953 travellers, followed by Singapore and London. Altogether, the top five international destinations accounted for more than 1.5 million passengers.

Despite the optimistic trends, the industry is expected to report a net loss of INR 30-40 billion in FY2025, similar to FY2024, but significantly lower than the INR 170-175 billion loss in FY2023. The ability of airlines to raise yields in proportion to input cost increases will be crucial for expanding profitability margins.

IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara emerged as the top airlines in market share for both domestic and international routes. With a strong 50 per cent share in the domestic market, IndiGo managed 4.99 million passengers in the quarter. The Middle East was a significant hub, accounting for nearly half of all international traffic. This showed in both April and May with 49 per cent, and slightly less at 47 per cent in June, followed by traffic to the Asia Pacific and European regions.The surge in passenger numbers and aircraft movements reflect the growing demand for air travel. This popularity is likely driven by its strategic location and efficient services, making Mumbai airport a preferred choice for many travellers.
