The Maharashtra government has fast-tracked the project in line with the airport’s commercialisation strategy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport and flagged off the final stretch of the underground Metro-3 (Aqua Line) corridor on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister also launched ‘Mumbai One’, an integrated common mobility app that brings together a dozen public transport operators (PTOs) under one digital platform.

The Prime Minister arrived in Navi Mumbai around 3 pm, where he undertook a walkthrough of the newly built airport before inaugurating its first phase. Built at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore, the airport’s initial phase comprises a single runway and one terminal building capable of handling 20 million passengers annually.

Commercial flight operations are expected to commence in December, finally bringing relief to the overburdened city airport and fulfilling a decades-long demand for a second aviation hub serving the metropolitan region.

He also flagged off the final phase of the Metro-3 corridor between Acharya Atre Chowk and Cuffe Parade, which shall complete the 33.5-km fully underground route linking Aarey-JVLR to Cuffe Parade. The line will open to commuters from Oct 9, operating between 5.55 am and 10.30 pm.The Mumbai One app will be a common platform for Metro lines 1, 2A, 7 and 3, monorail, Navi Mumbai Metro, the suburban railway, and major bus undertakings — BEST, TMT, MBMT, KDMT, and NMMT.

The app will allow commuters to purchase tickets digitally, plan multimodal journeys, and access real-time travel updates on routes and schedules. With this initiative, authorities aim to promote cashless, paperless and integrated public transport, ensuring convenience and better last-mile connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
