Record-breaking year for Madhya Pradesh in tourism with over 110 mn visitors in 2023, ET TravelWorld

Madhya Pradesh has set a new benchmark in its tourism industry, welcoming over 110 million (11 crore) tourists in 2023. This unprecedented influx marks a significant recovery and growth, surpassing pre-Covid visitor numbers and establishing the state as a top tourist destination in India.

According to data from the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC), the state received 112.1 million visitors from January to December 2023. This represents a remarkable surge compared to 2022, which saw 34.1 million tourists. The rise in tourism is attributed to the state’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and increasingly popular spiritual experiences.

Ujjain leads the way
Ujjain, one of India’s holiest cities, emerged as the most visited destination in Madhya Pradesh, attracting over 52.8 million pilgrims and tourists. Other significant religious sites, including Maihar, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, and Salkanpur, also ranked among the top ten most visited destinations in the state. This trend underscores the growing appeal of spiritual tourism in Madhya Pradesh.

Landmark projects such as Mahakal Lok in Ujjain and Ektma Dham in Omkareshwar have been pivotal in drawing visitors, enhancing the spiritual tourism landscape of the state.

The record-breaking tourist numbers coincide with Madhya Pradesh Tourism Day, celebrated on May 24, the foundation day of MPSTDC.

Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture, and Managing Director of the MP Tourism Board, remarked on this achievement, “The record-breaking tourist arrivals are a testament to Madhya Pradesh’s immense appeal as a diverse and enriching travel destination. Our unwavering focus on developing infrastructure, promoting religious tourism, and showcasing our unique cultural heritage has been instrumental in attracting visitors from across India and the globe. We are committed to further enhancing our tourism offerings and ensuring that Madhya Pradesh remains a top choice for travellers seeking memorable and enriching experiences.”Madhya Pradesh’s rich tapestry of experiences caters to various travelers, from history buffs and nature enthusiasts to spiritual seekers and adventure lovers. The state boasts ancient forts, serene temples, captivating wildlife sanctuaries, and vibrant cultural festivals, making it an ideal destination for an unforgettable journey.

This collaboration between KidZania and Madhya Pradesh Tourism is poised to set a new standard in experiential learning and tourism promotion. Under this strategic partnership, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to establish Madhya Pradesh Tourism Experience Centers at KidZania locations in Mumbai and Delhi/NCR. This initiative makes Madhya Pradesh the first state to introduce such an immersive tourism experience specifically designed for children.

The surge in tourism has positively impacted Madhya Pradesh’s economy, generating employment opportunities, boosting local businesses, and contributing to overall infrastructure development.

Shukla emphasied the state’s commitment to furthering this growth, “The surge in tourism has had a positive impact on Madhya Pradesh’s economy, generating employment opportunities, boosting local businesses, and contributing to overall infrastructure development. The state government’s commitment to enhancing tourism infrastructure, promoting cultural heritage, and showcasing the state’s natural wonders has been instrumental in driving this growth.”

The central Indian state boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage attracting millions of tourists annually. Ujjain, with over 52 million visitors, is renowned for its ancient temples and religious significance. Maihar, a spiritual hub, attracts around 16 million pilgrims each year.

Indore, a vibrant city, allures over 10 million visitors with its culinary delights and architectural marvels. Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, Jabalpur, and other destinations offer a perfect blend of nature and spirituality.
