As summer approaches, Indian travellers are turning their sights towards Europe in growing numbers. According to data shared by Atlys, a digital visa-processing platform, Schengen visa applications from India have risen by 29% compared to the same period last year, reaffirming Europe’s enduring popularity among outbound tourists.

Southern European nations—particularly Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Italy—have emerged as preferred gateways into the Schengen region. Known for their Mediterranean climate, culinary richness, and vibrant cultural heritage, these destinations are attracting Indian travellers seeking immersive and sun-soaked holidays. The average summer temperature of 20–30°C across most Schengen countries further supports ideal travel conditions.

Atlys has observed a 23.5% year-on-year increase in visa applications from Gen Z and Millennial travellers, with extended holidays, cultural exploration, and experiential travel cited as key motivators. Alongside this generational trend, visa demand is also expanding geographically. While metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru remain dominant in application volumes, tier-two cities including Pune, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh have seen a 17.8% rise in applications—indicating a broader base of interest in outbound European travel.

“We’re witnessing a new wave of Indian travellers who are exploring the world with greater intention and curiosity,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO, Atlys. “Travel today isn’t just about visiting landmarks, it’s about experiencing cultures, connecting with people, and creating lasting memories.”

Luxury travel demand remains strong for destinations such as France, Italy, and Switzerland, with travellers drawn to the French Riviera, Tuscany’s vineyards, and alpine lake resorts. Meanwhile, adventure-seekers are increasingly opting for Austria, Slovenia, and northern Spain, known for hiking trails, water sports, and nature-centric tourism.

The rising demand is expected to place further strain on visa processing timelines, making early planning critical for prospective travellers. Atlys continues to position itself as an enabler of simplified visa journeys, providing digital assistance and support across multiple geographies.

With European summer appeal remaining consistent, this growth highlights India’s continued emergence as a major outbound tourism market, increasingly driven by younger, aspirational travellers from across the country.
