Subaru Legacy bows out after 2025

The car that forms the basis for the Subaru Outback is about to disappear.

On Tuesday, Subaru announce the Legacy will exit production after the 2025 model year.

The Legacy nameplate has been on sale since 1989. Subaru has screwed together more than 1.3 million Legacys in the U.S. at its Lafayette plant in Indiana over the course of six generations of the nameplate.

Subaru noted the end of the Legacy nameplate in 2025 marks a shift from passengers cars to SUVs and crossovers along with a transition to electrified and electric vehicles. The automaker also produces the Outback crossover wagon at its Lafayette plant. With the Legacy exiting production, Subaru could increase production of its popular Outback.

The 2025 Legacy will cost $26,040 including a $1,145 destination fee when it arrives at dealers this spring. The carries over with no changes after a 2023 refresh. Every Legacy features all-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED headlights, and active lane control.

Base Legacys feature cloth seats, 17-inch wheels, and two 7.0-inch touchscreens with one for infotainment and one for climate controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

The current Legacy lineup stands at five trims including base, Legacy Premium for $28,340, Legacy Limited for $35,150, Legacy Sport for $35,640, and Legacy Touring XT for $39,340.

The Legacy is the cheapest midsize sedan, and it’s the only one that comes standard with all-wheel drive. The departure of the model makes the segment more expensive for value-oriented buyers.
