Thailand makes digital arrival card mandatory for international visitors upon entry, ET TravelWorld

Kyiv, Jan 8 (IANS) Thailand received over 35.54 million foreign tourists in 2024, a rise of 26.27 per cent from a year earlier, thanks to eased entry rules and visa exemption measures, official data showed.

Starting 1 May 2025, Thailand will implement a significant change to its entry process by requiring all foreign travelers to complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arrival. The new digital system, replacing the old paper-based TM6 form, applies to all non-Thai nationals entering by air, land, or sea—including visa-exempt and visa-required visitors. The move aims to streamline immigration checks, reduce processing times, and enhance border security. The TDAC must be submitted online within 72 hours before travel through the official portal ([tdac.immigration.go.th](https://tdac.immigration.go.th)). Unlike the previous TM6, which was temporarily suspended, the digital card will be mandatory for all foreign arrivals, with the exception of Thai citizens. Travellers will receive a confirmation, which they should keep handy—either digitally or printed—for presentation at immigration checkpoints.

Thai officials emphasize that the shift to a fully digital system aligns with global travel trends, such as Singapore’s SG Arrival Card and the EU’s ETIAS. “This upgrade will make entry smoother for tourists while improving our ability to manage visitor flows securely,” said a spokesperson from the Immigration Bureau. The change comes as Thailand prepares for an expected surge in tourism, targeting 40 million foreign visitors in 2025, up from 35.5 million in 2024.

The tourism industry has welcomed the move, with airlines and hotels already informing guests about the new requirement. Travel experts recommend completing the TDAC as soon as flight or border-crossing plans are confirmed to avoid last-minute issues. “It’s a simple process, but doing it early ensures a stress-free start to your trip,” said a Bangkok-based tour operator. No fees are associated with the application, making it a hassle-free step for travellers.

While the digital system is designed for efficiency, authorities caution that non-compliance could lead to delays. Unlike the previous suspension of the TM6 form, the TDAC will be strictly enforced, meaning travellers without approval may face additional screening.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) plans to launch an international awareness campaign, working with embassies and airlines to ensure widespread understanding of the rules before the May deadline.

For frequent visitors, the new process eliminates the need for repetitive paperwork, offering a faster, more convenient entry experience. Tourists are advised to bookmark the official website and check for updates as the launch date approaches.
