The New Model Y Performance Is Here. Can it Reverse Tesla’s Slumping Sales?

Tesla updated the Model Y earlier this year, but held back the hot Performance flavor. Now, the range-topping variant has officially arrived. Curiously, its debut takes place in Europe, where Elon Musk’s company has been on a downward spiral so far this year. According to sales data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla deliveries are down by a third through July. The question is, can the Performance model move the needle?

A follow-up to last year’s revised Model 3 Performance, the SUV counterpart delivers 460 horsepower from a dual-motor setup. It sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, or to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.3 seconds. Not too shabby for an electric crossover weighing 4,482 pounds (2,033 kilograms). Flat out, it’ll do 155 mph (250 km/h), though few owners are likely to attempt it.

While Tesla won’t disclose the battery pack’s capacity, it says the new Model Y Performance uses higher-density cells. WLTP range is estimated at 360 miles (580 kilometers), just four miles (six kilometers) short of the Long Range AWD. A 15-minute Supercharger session can add enough energy for 151 miles (243 kilometers) of driving.

The 2026 Model Y Performance inherits adaptive dampers from the sedan but further refines them for the SUV’s chunkier size. It also comes with 21-inch forged wheels wrapped in “optimized tires” and paired with red brake calipers. Exterior tweaks, including a carbon rear spoiler, aren’t just for show. Apparently, they improve aerodynamics by increasing downforce and reducing drag.

Inside, there’s a bit of a surprise: a slightly larger 16-inch touchscreen with higher resolution for sharper graphics. Up front, the heated and ventilated seats feature stronger side bolstering and extendable thigh support. Rear passengers sit on perforated, heated seats with power recline. Tesla also mentions new drive modes for “more freedom for high-speed driving,” along with improved sound insulation and acoustic glass for a quieter cabin.

In Germany, where the Europe-bound models will be built at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg site, the 2026 Model Y Performance starts at €61,990. That’s about €9,000 more than the Long Range AWD. Deliveries begin in September.

This updated Performance variant follows the recent debut of a stretched six-seat model in China. It precedes a cheaper entry-level version, which is expected to generate higher sales volumes.
