The Toyota Tacoma Is Still the Most Popular Truck in Its Class—And It’s Not Even Close

As 2025 nears its end, there’s one mid-size truck that continues to outsell the rest in the United States—the Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma is on track to have its best sales year in a decade, and a look at the sales results proves that American buyers still prefer Japan’s truck over the domestic competition.

Through the third quarter of this year, Toyota has sold 204,464 Tacomas, a 61.2 percent increase over 2024. Toyota did launch the fourth-generation Tacoma for 2024, which is likely why the 2025 numbers look so much better, but there’s no denying the truck’s popularity. Sales for the truck will likely surpass the 257,000 sold in 2021.

Despite Tacoma’s commendable lead over the competition, sales for nearly all other mid-size trucks increased through the third quarter. The second best-selling mid-size truck was the Chevrolet Colorado, which didn’t even crack 100,000 sales by the end of September, selling 77,390 trucks.

There’s also a large gap between the Chevy and the third-place Ford Ranger, which had sold 48,278 pickups through the first nine months of the year. Sales were up 57.4 percent and barely ahead of the Nissan Frontier, which sold 47,630. It’s the only truck that recorded fewer sales this year than last, and sales were down 12.2 percent.

Model 2025 Q3 Sales 2025 YTD Sales
Toyota Tacoma 73,591 204,464
Chevrolet Colorado 24,575 77,390
Ford Ranger 15,301 48,278
Nissan Frontier 17,032 47,630
Jeep Gladiator 13,113 38,513
GMC Canyon 9,539 27,878

The Jeep Gladiator was the fifth best-selling mid-sizer this year, with 38,513 sales, up 18.0 percent. The GMC Canyon ended the third quarter in last place, but a rising tide lifts all boats, and the brand sold 27,878 trucks so far this year, up 3.4 percent.

Competition will get tougher soon when Ram launches its mid-size offering, and it has a mountain to climb if the automaker believes it can dethrone the iconic Toyota.
