Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is marking the Unimog’s 80th anniversary with a concept that puts the legendary all-rounder into lounge mode—without asking it to take off its work boots. Developed in collaboration with Hellgeth Engineering, this luxury-leaning Unimog combines its renowned off-road capability with increased power, added comfort, and a design that looks equally at home on a mountainside or parked in front of a five-star hotel.
Franziska Cusumano, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, calls it a statement of innovation and passion. Translated from marketing speak: the Unimog can still climb rocks, but now it does so with leather upholstery, ambient LEDs, and far fewer jolts to your spine. Longtime Mercedes fans may recall the old “Funmog.”
At its core, nothing fundamental has changed—and that’s the point. The vehicle is based on the highly capable Unimog U 4023, complete with portal axles, a torsionally flexible frame, selectable all-wheel drive, and longitudinal and differential locks on both axles.
Power now comes from the Mercedes-Benz OM 936 six-cylinder engine, which replaces the four-cylinder unit and makes 300 horsepower. Mercedes promises improved tractive power and a more refined transmission setup.

Visually, the Unimog wears a matte gray finish, rides on 20-inch aluminum beadlock wheels, and features a modern LED lighting system. Traditional side mirrors have been replaced by MirrorCam, which uses digital cameras and interior displays. According to Mercedes, this setup is just as useful off-road as it is in city traffic—though it’s arguably more enjoyable when admiring glances appear on a screen rather than disappearing into a blind spot.
The double cab seats up to four people and now comes trimmed in high-quality leather, complete with contrast stitching, LED ambient lighting, and even leather floor mats. In short, the workhorse has slipped into a tailored suit. Mud is still welcome—it just feels less like a job hazard and more like a spa treatment now.
Visually, the presence leans SUV; mechanically, it remains a no-compromise Unimog. Anyone who’s ever thought the legendary off-road capability could use a little more power—and a little less hard plastic—now has their answer.
This isn’t just a marketing exercise, either. Next year, the vehicle will be put to work at a customer site to gather real-world data for a possible next development phase. In other words, the luxury Unimog will have to prove it can do more than look good—it still has to earn its keep.
This Unimog is a statement. It can handle both high gloss and high climbs. It goes where others turn back, and it still looks ready for a fancy dinner afterward. The irony? The valet appreciates the leather floor mats, while the outdoorsman values the portal axles. And somewhere in the Arabian desert, someone now knows exactly which vehicle they absolutely need.
As for the price, that remains firmly under wraps—for now.
