Well, after a week of teaser videos previewing what we thought would finally be a production WRX STI, Subaru unveiled this in Japan instead. Another concept.
While this may look like a production-ready WRX STI sedan, complete with big wheels and proper red accents, Subaru calls it the WRX STI Sport# Prototype and hasn’t confirmed anything for production. We wish we were joking.
Details are slim, but we do know that this prototype is powered by the same 2.4-liter boxer engine found in the current WRX. That unit makes 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque on the standard WRX, but we would hope that this prototype packs a bit more oomph.
Subaru says the STI Sport# is paired to a six-speed manual transmission, and of course, sends power to all four wheels. The company didn’t provide any specifics beyond that, but it does say “Coming Soon” on its website. Fingers crossed.
Motor1’s Take: We were really expecting to see the new WRX STI in Tokyo today. Unfortunately, it’s just another prototype previewing what could maybe, possibly become a production model. That said, this prototype does look closer to production than any of the others we’ve seen. Here’s hoping that this one actually makes it to production.
