Toyota has issued a massive recall that affects more than one million vehicles. They may have a defect that prevents the rearview camera from displaying properly on the infotainment screen if the driver performs certain actions too soon after starting the vehicle.
According to the recall report, equipped with the Parking Assist ECU may experience two issues. The software can cause the rearview image to freeze when reverse is selected within a specific time frame after starting the car, or the image may not display at the next startup if the car is turned on and then off within a specific time.
Toyota began investigating the potential issue in April 2024 after receiving field reports in Japan. During the test, the automaker discovered a software problem and decided, late last month, to issue a recall, as the vehicles could fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The automaker found that if a vehicle is shifted into reverse with 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, the screen may freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. That’s plenty of time for another car or child to cross the vehicle’s reverse path. The inoperative display issue happens when two 23-millisecond camera optical alignment data writing processes occur randomly during the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.
The recall affects nearly every Toyota and Lexus model. It even involves the Subaru Solterra. Here’s the full list of the affected models:
Toyota has already begun contacting affected owners. It will instruct them to take their vehicle to a Toyota service center, where a technician will update the Parking Asset ECU software.
