Toyota to replace over 100,000 engines in Tundra, Lexus LX

  • Toyota will be replacing its twin-turbo V-6 engine in the Tundra and Lexus LX
  • The action comes as a fix for a recall announced in May for machine debris in some engines
  • Redesigned for 2022, the Tundra full-size pickup has experienced several recalls

Toyota has confirmed a fix for a recall involving over 100,000 Tundra full-size pickup trucks and Lexus LX SUVs from model years 2022 and 2023: new engines.

The automaker will replace engines in all the of the affected vehicles, Automotive News reported Thursday. When it announced the recall in May, Toyota said it encompassed 102,000 Tundra and LX vehicles, but did not confirm that it would be replacing their twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engines.

When the engines in the affected vehicles were assembled, machine debris may not have been cleared, Toyota said when it launched the recall. This could result in potential engine knocking, a rough running engine, or the inability to start or continue to run the engine.

Engine replacements will be conducted by Toyota and Lexus dealers free of charge. Details had not been posted by the NHTSA at press time, but a Toyota spokesperson told Automotive News that customers would be notified this month. Customers will also receive a loaner or rental car for the duration of the work, which is expected to take between 13 and 21 hours to complete.

This is the latest in a string of recalls for the current-generation Toyota Tundra pickup truck, and another black mark for the Toyota brand, long known for its truck reliability and engine longevity. Redesigned for the 2022 model year, the Tundra ditched a V-8 for the twin-turbo V-6, which is also available as part of a hybrid powertrain.

Earlier this year in February, Toyota recalled 280,000 Tundras as well as Sequoia and Lexus LX full-size SUVs for a transmission that can stay in gear when put in neutral, creating a rollaway risk. In August 2023 more than 168,000 Tundras were recalled for a fuel line that can leak. In June 2022, not long after the new model went on sale, it was recalled for a rear axle housing that can separate from the shaft.
