Travel has emerged as the leading category in online consumer spending, registering a remarkable 73 per cent growth in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to Simpl’s Checkout Scan. This surge in spending is attributed to various factors, including the Union elections, cricketing events, summer vacations, and an increase in visa-free tourist destinations.

Simpl’s 1-Tap Checkout reported a 42 per cent increase in overall consumer spending across various categories, including travel, food and beverage, services, and grocery. This growth was led by consumers from cities like Ahmedabad, Pune, and Hyderabad, with emerging metros showing significant spending increases: 77 per cent in Ahmedabad, 74 per cent in Pune, and 64 per cent in Hyderabad.

Key Drivers of Growth:
– Union Elections and Cricket Events: Major national events have spurred travel spending.
– Summer Vacations: Seasonal travel has contributed significantly to the increase.
– Visa-Free Destinations: The rise in visa-free travel options has made international travel more accessible.

Travel spending by age groups
Consumers aged 51-60 and those over 60, commonly referred to as Gen X and Boomers, posted impressive growth rates of 89 per cent and 87 per cent respectively. This indicates a rising trend of travel among middle-aged and retired individuals, driven by increased convenience and affordability.

Other growth categories
Food and Beverage: 68 per cent growth
Services: 53 per cent growth
Grocery: 35 per cent growth

Smaller cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Indore, Guwahati, Vijayawada, and Lucknow also showed substantial growth in consumer spending, with figures reaching up to 84 per cent in some areas.

The surge in TNPL demand is largely driven by individuals aged 26-45 from cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune. Interestingly, solo travellers have shown a significant preference for TNPL, highlighting the flexibility and convenience it offers. Over the past 12 months, the average ticket size for TNPL has increased by 60 per cent

Consumers primarily spent on travel service providers including MakeMyTrip, EaseMyTrip, Redbus, Goibibo, AbhiBus, Oyo, and ZoomCar. Other popular merchants included Blinkit, Zomato, Myntra, Bigbasket, Dunzo, Meesho, and Nykaa.Commenting on the development, Nitya Sharma, Founder and CEO, Simpl, commented on the trend, “The first half of 2024 has been a blockbuster year for the internet commerce economy. Union elections, cricketing events, and visa-free tourist destinations have significantly driven consumer spending online. This is reflective in the robust growth across categories such as travel, food and beverages, services, and grocery. Convenience, selection, and affordability are key differentiators in e-commerce today, and we are excited to witness the growing adoption of our 1-Tap Checkout by millions of consumers across our extensive merchant universe.”

The significant growth in online consumer spending, particularly in travel, underscores the evolving dynamics of e-commerce and the increasing importance of convenience and accessibility.
