A Game Changer for North India’s Connectivity, ETTravelWorld

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated Phase I of the Noida International Airport at Jewar, marking a major addition to India’s aviation infrastructure as the country continues to scale capacity in line with rising passenger demand.

Developed at an investment of around ₹11,200 crore, the airport is expected to serve as a second major aviation gateway for the Delhi-NCR region and adjoining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and western India. The project comes at a time when India has emerged as the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, with airports handling over five lakh passengers daily.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the expansion of aviation infrastructure reflects both economic growth and increasing accessibility of air travel. “Today, airports in India are not just transport hubs but engines of economic activity, creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and employment,” he said.

Capacity expansion and decongestion

The Noida International Airport is expected to reduce pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by providing an alternative for both domestic and international traffic. The catchment area includes key population and industrial centres such as Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Mathura, Meerut and Aligarh.Officials indicated that improved road and rail connectivity could enable passengers from multiple states to use Jewar as a primary departure point, particularly as airline operations expand over time.

Focus on multi-modal connectivity

The project has been planned as part of a broader multi-modal transport network. The airport is connected via the Yamuna Expressway and will be linked to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, with further integration planned through the Ganga Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Rail connectivity is being developed through the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), while future plans include integration with the Delhi–Varanasi high-speed rail corridor. Bus-based public transport networks and electric mobility solutions are also expected to support last-mile connectivity.

The Prime Minister noted that such integration is critical to ensuring that infrastructure investments deliver broader economic impact. “Connectivity is being developed in a way that strengthens both passenger movement and logistics efficiency,” he said.

Economic and logistics implications

Beyond passenger travel, the airport is expected to support regional economic development by improving access to markets for industries, MSMEs and agricultural producers in western Uttar Pradesh.

Its proximity to the Dadri logistics hub—where the eastern and western dedicated freight corridors intersect—positions the region as a potential multimodal logistics centre. This is expected to support sectors such as exports, manufacturing and perishable goods movement.

Aviation ecosystem and MRO push

The inauguration also comes amid a broader expansion of India’s aviation ecosystem, including large aircraft orders and growing workforce requirements.

To support this, a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility is planned at the airport. The government has been pushing to develop domestic MRO capabilities, as a large share of aircraft maintenance is currently carried out overseas.

Passenger growth and policy direction

Highlighting sectoral growth, the Prime Minister said schemes such as UDAN have played a key role in expanding regional connectivity and making air travel accessible to a wider segment of the population.

He added that the next phase of aviation growth will require not just capacity addition but also improvements in service quality, efficiency and affordability.

Design and cultural elements

The airport’s terminal design incorporates elements inspired by regional architecture and cultural motifs, reflecting an effort to integrate local identity into infrastructure development. Officials said such features are intended to position the airport as both a transport facility and a representative gateway to the region.

Architectural features such as arches, courtyards, and traditional structural motifs will connect travelers with the state’s rich cultural legacy. The terminal is being developed as a multi-level structure inspired by the Ganga ghats, evoking the experience of the iconic riverfronts of Varanasi and Haridwar.

Traditional handicrafts from various states across India will be used in the airport’s aesthetic design.

Strategic positioning

Industry observers say the launch of Noida International Airport reflects a broader shift towards developing multiple aviation hubs to support demand across regions, rather than relying on a few metro airports.

With passenger traffic expected to continue growing over the next decade, projects such as Jewar are seen as critical to ensuring capacity, improving connectivity and supporting long-term economic activity linked to aviation and logistics.
