BFGoodrich’s Iconic Off-Road Tire Is 50 Years Old. That’s A Big Deal

  • BFGoodrich’s iconic All-Terrain T/A tire was first introduced in 1976.
  • Just one year later, BFG found success in the Baja 500 & 1000 desert races.
  • BFGoodrich recently attended its 50th Baja 1000 and has served as the official tire of SCORE for 48 years.

BFGoodrich has been cranking out all-terrain tires for decades. The legend of off-road racing has supported countless teams on their quest for Baja glory. Now, in 2026, BFG looks back as its Radial All-Terrain T/A tire turns 50 years old.

First launched in 1976, the Radial All-Terrain T/A tire quickly became an icon of off-pavement adventure. When you see the white lettering around the side of that tire, you know you’ve got proper gear underpinning your rig.

BFGoodrich took to desert racing immediately after developing this tire. Lessons learned during the 1976 Baja 1000 translated into class wins the following year. And in just ten years, BFG would claim its first overall victory during the 1986 Baja 1000.

Fast forward to today, and you’ll find the words “Baja Champion” printed on the side of all BFG all-terrain tires. BFGoodrich has rounded out its off-road portfolio with more focused options, as well. You have HD-Terrains for larger applications. The KM3 is a brilliant mud-terrain tire. And there are race-specific versions of these tires as well.

The popularity of the all-terrain tire has led to the BFGoodrich name becoming synonymous with off-road excellence. Various versions of its all-terrain tires have since won many classes at the Baja 1000. In fact, in 2010, the tire manufacturer notched its 70th overall SCORE victory with a win at the legendary Mexican desert race.

The 5th-generation of the Radial All-Terrain T/A tire arrived in 2024. Dubbed the KO3, it builds on the success and performance of the KO2 that came before it

Tire technology has evolved significantly over the five decades separating the first T/A and the KO3. Success in motorsports allows engineers to evolve their consumer products, which in turn lets a company like BFGoodrich celebrate 50 years of making a great tire.

Motor1’s Take: In the years since the launch of the All-Terrain T/A, other tire manufacturers have created capable off-road options. Some even prefer the balanced performance of a tire like the Toyo Open-Country or Falken Wildpeak.

For me personally, BFGoodrich stands above its competition thanks to the knowledge gleaned from decades of cranking out tires. Couple that with clear results in off-road racing, and we wind up with a consumer tire built to do great things.
