BMW recalls 105,588 vehicles due to starter motor that may overheat

BMW has issued a recall spanning seven of its models lines, though only certain model variants built between the 2019 and 2021 model years are affected.

The cause of the recall, which affects 105,588 vehicles in the U.S., is a starter motor that could overheat if damaged and the driver repeatedly attempts to start the engine using long starting attempts.

While an overheating starter motor isn’t a major issue on its own, it could potentially ignite nearby combustible material. BMW in its recall notice gave the example of noise insulation material located near the starter motor potentially catching fire if some oil is present.

BMW said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

The affected vehicles include the 2020 3-Series, 2019-2020 X5, 2020 X6, 2019-2020 X7, 2020-2021 7-Series, and 2020 8-Series.

The remedy requires dealers updating the vehicle software, a service which will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owner.
