BMW recalls over 290,000 X3 SUVs due to interior cargo rail issues

BMW is recalling 291,112 X3 SUVs over interior cargo rails that could detach during a crash, potentially causing injuries.

The recall covers multiple variants of the X3 from model years 2018 to 2023, including the X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X3 M, according to info disclosed by the NHTSA on Monday. These represent most versions of what has been BMW’s bestselling model in the U.S. in recent years. The X3’s last major update came for the 2022 model year, while its last full redesign was for the 2018 model year.

These vehicles have rear cargo rails that could become damaged in a crash. This could cause the rails to separate from their mounting points, creating a potential projectile that could increase the likelihood of occupant injuries. BMW did not report a root cause for this issue.

BMW first became aware of the issue through litigation by an owner involved in a rear collision. The recall population was determined by checking manufacturing records for vehicles built with this rear cargo-rail configuration. BMW did not substantially update the X3 for the 2024 model year, but those models are not included in this recall. A redesigned X3 is on the way for 2025.

Owners will be notified via mail Aug. 30, 2024, of when to take their vehicles to dealerships, where the attachment bolts for the rear cargo rails will be replaced, free of charge. BMW will also reimburse owners on the off chance that they already had this work performed at their own expense.

For more information, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or visit BMW’s recall site.
