Ford Edge to be discontinued in 2024, won’t return for 2025

The Ford Edge midsize crossover SUV will be discontinued in the second quarter of 2024, and won’t return for a 2025 model year, Ford confirmed on Tuesday.

Production of Ford Edge continues into the second quarter and we will continue selling it through the year,” Ford spokesperson Jenn Banovetz confirmed via email. “There will not be a 2025 Edge.”

The end of the Edge had been rumored for years, but the redesigned 2024 Lincoln Nautilus suggested there might be another generation of the Edge. Production of the Nautilus shifted from Ford’s Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada to China, with deliveries expected this quarter. An extended wheelbase version of the Ford Edge, dubbed the Ford Edge L, is made in China and sold in other markets.

The Oakville plant where the related Edge was also produced has been shifted to build five as-of-yet unnamed electric vehicles. The shift was announced in 2020 with a production target of 2025, and it will likely include a three-row electric SUV

Launched in 2007, the Edge midsize crossover set the pace for a sweet spot between smaller compact crossovers like the Escape and larger three-row SUVs like the Explorer. It rivaled the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevy Blazer, and Honda Passport, among many others, including new entrants such as the Mazda CX-70. It seems like an odd time to pull out of a seemingly profitable segment, especially with a price ranging from $40,000 for the base SE to well over $50,000 for the ST with a few options.

It’s sold well without much new investment from Ford, too.

The 2024 Ford Edge will be sold throughout the year, according to Ford, but its end will leave a big hole in sales volume. Ford moved 106,098 units of the five-seat Edge in 2023, up 24.1% from 2022. The Ford Bronco midsize SUV sold slightly less than the Edge, while the smaller Bronco Sport that’s based on the Ford Escape sold higher at 127,476 units. Those numbers trail the Escape and Explorer in Ford’s robust family of crossover SUVs.

The Escape vanishing from the market has also been the subject of speculation as Ford builds out its EV portfolio and rides the success of the Bronco models.

Ford’s not the only one discontinuing an older crossover with a veteran gas engine. The list of car discontinued for 2024 included the Nissan Murano, Jeep Cherokee, and Mazda CX-9.
