Honda recalls 205,760 SUVs due to increased fire risk

Honda is recalling more than 200,000 crossover SUVs because fuel-filler neck components may separate, allowing fuel to leak and potentially cause fires.

The recall includes 2023-2024 Honda Passport two-row mid-size SUVs and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot three-row mid-size SUVs. Some of these vehicles may have an incomplete connection between the fuel-filler neck tube and pipe, two pieces that allow fuel to flow into the gas tank, according to the NHTSA.

If not properly connected, the fuel-filler neck tube and fuel-filler pipe could separate during a crash, the agency said. That could allow fuel to leak out, and potentially catch fire if an ignition source is nearby.

During installation of the fuel pipe assembly, components may have been assembled out of sequence, preventing them from connecting properly, according to Honda. The automaker received one warranty claim related to this issue, which was filed at a dealership during a vehicle’s pre-delivery inspection, but is not aware of any injuries or deaths related to this issue as of Nov. 20, 2024.

Dealers will inspect the fuel-filler neck tube and pipe, and conduct any necessary repairs to ensure a complete connection, free of charge. Honda will also reimburse owners who have already had this work done at their own expense.

Honda expects to mail owner notification letters by Jan. 6, 2025. Owners can also call the automaker’s customer service department at 1-888-234-2138 or visit Honda’s recall site here. Honda’s reference number for this recall is OKM.

The Passport and Pilot were not among the Honda models in two other large recalls undertaken by the automaker. In October Honda announced one recall of approximately 720,000 vehicles over cracked fuel pumps and another of 1.7 million vehicles for steering problems.
