Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbo-4, which provides the snap, crackle, and pop of “N Grin Shifts” from Hyundai’s N performance arm to various models from the brand, as well as the Genesis G70, may have a bum fuel pump that can make the engine go into limp mode.
The recall disclosed by the NHTSA on Monday encompasses 54,647 Hyundai N and Genesis G70 vehicles, but the bulk of the recall involves the Genesis G70. Here’s the list:
2019-2022 Hyundai Veloster N
2022-2023 Hyundai Elantra N
2022-2023 Hyundai Kona N
2019-2023 Genesis G70
The fuel control valve in the fuel pump can wear prematurely, causing it to fail and let too much fuel into the pump. That will make the air/fuel mix too rich, and lead to a loss in power while driving, especially at low speeds. Drivers might notice a lack of power, rough idling, a loud engine misfire, and/or a check engine light in the cluster.
In a five-year span, Hyundai confirmed 2,460 cases related to the recall in the U.S. market, but it knew of no reported crashes or injuries related to the issue.
Owners can expect notification by mail by Sept. 9, 2024, to bring their cars in to a Hyundai/Genesis service center to at least have a software revision. Vehicles with the malfunction light on may have to get the high-pressure fuel pump replaced as a free fix provided by Hyundai. Most of the recalled vehicles are still under warranty, but Hyundai may provide reimbursement if for some reason the owner had the work done on their own dime.
