IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers has stepped down from his role following a board meeting of InterGlobe Aviation held on March 10, the airline said in a regulatory filing.
The resignation marks the end of Elbers’ tenure at India’s largest airline, which began in September 2022. He will be relieved from the company with effect from the close of business hours on March 10, 2026.
The airline said it expects to announce a new leadership appointment shortly.
The development comes months after the airline faced a major operational disruption that led to widespread flight cancellations, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded and drawing regulatory scrutiny. The crisis also resulted in financial losses for the airline, including heavy penalties imposed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In its filing, IndiGo said that Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation and co-founder of the airline, will assume management of the company’s affairs on an interim basis until a new chief executive is appointed.
“The Board of Directors would like to thank Pieter for his contribution and service to the organisation and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the airline said.
Chairman of the Board Vikram Singh Mehta said Bhatia’s return to oversee operations is aimed at strengthening the airline’s culture and reinforcing operational performance. “Rahul returns to assume management of the affairs of the airline to strengthen the company’s culture, reinforce operational excellence and deepen its commitment to delivering exceptional service of care, reliability and professionalism to its customers,” Mehta said.
Bhatia said the airline will focus on strengthening service standards and stakeholder confidence while continuing to build on IndiGo’s growth trajectory.
“Having founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years, I feel a deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards our nation, the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders,” he said.
Elbers, who joined IndiGo after serving as Chief Executive Officer of Dutch airline KLM, described his tenure at the airline as an honour.
“It has been both an honour and privilege to serve as IndiGo’s CEO these past years and to be part of the great IndiGo family and its growth story,” Elbers said in his resignation letter.
During his leadership, IndiGo expanded both its domestic and international network and continued to strengthen its position as India’s largest airline by market share.
However, the later phase of Elbers’ tenure was marred by a massive operational meltdown in December 2025. The flight crisis was triggered by IndiGo’s struggle to implement new rules designed to prevent pilot fatigue.
Between December 3 and 5, 2025, IndiGo cancelled over 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,900 more, affecting over 300,000 passengers.
