Comfort can be a pain, at least when it comes to automatically retracting seat belts in some new Corvettes. The 2024-2025 Chevrolet Corvette has been recalled for a seat belt retractor that can get stuck in a locked position when it’s in stowed mode. General Motors also urged dealers to stop the sale of any new Corvettes until replacement parts become available.
The NHTSA on Monday disclosed that if it’s locked and stowed, the belt cannot be accessed to use as a restraint. Chevy will be recalling 13,464 Vettes.
The problem with the retractors—which make it easier to reach the seat belt over your shoulder in the cramped cabin of the Corvette—applies to both the driver and passenger seats. Two components in the belt mechanism made by the supplier can be out of the dimensional specs GM intended, and cause the jam. The user may notice that the belt is locked and cannot be pulled forward to use as a safety restraint.
With the Nissan GT-R ending production this year, following the end of the Audi R8 and the Acura NSX, America’s supercar has fewer competitors than ever. The mid-engine C8 Corvette remains a steal, costing below $70,000 and with V-8 power that launches it to 60 mph in less than three seconds.
Owners can expect notification by mail as early as July 22. They’ll be advised to take their car into a GM service center for inspection and replacement. The new cars are still under warranty so there will be no cost to owners except their time. GM will provide courtesy transportation for owners of the recalled cars.
