Only Rolls-Royce Could Make a Chess Set Like This

It’s not uncommon for automakers to dish up some swag to help promote the brand. But we’ve never seen anything like this. Apparently, Rolls-Royce owners enjoy a rousing game of chess. Now, they can go full checkmate with a chessboard unlike any other.

Actually, anyone can own the Rolls-Royce Chess Board. That’s the official name for this avant-garde chess set, and it looks incredible. In proper Rolls-Royce fashion, handcrafted aluminum embodies the board and the minimalist pieces. The wood veneer for the playing surface is laser-cut, with each square coming from the same slice of wood to “achieve a consistent pattern in the natural grail, ensuring the wood will age uniformly over the years.” Yup, this is something from Rolls-Royce.

It gets better. Small magnets are embedded at the base of each piece, and additional magnets are placed under each square. This keeps pieces perfectly centered for each move, all while lending “a sense of precision and decisiveness” during the match. As for those pieces, they are ceramic-coated aluminum monoliths with polished stainless steel heads. According to the automaker, the pieces are “deliberately evocative of the solid-metal organ stops found in Rolls-Royce motor cars.” That’s some seriously affluent marketing speak for a chess set—even for Rolls-Royce. We’ll just say it looks amazing.

So how do you get one? Much like buying a Rolls-Royce car, you have to stop by a company showroom or boutique and commission one. You can choose from 13 different shades of leather for the piece holder compartment and four different wood veneers for the board. There’s no mention of this being a limited-edition thing, nor how long it will take to get one.

Rolls-Royce doesn’t mention a price, either. That probably means we could never hope to afford one, but perhaps we’ll see a Rolls-Royce Chess Set on eBay someday. We can dream, right?
