Pulled out of borewell, child whispers ‘papa’ and dies | Bhopal News

BHOPAL: The five-year-old girl who had fallen into a borewell in MP‘s Rajgarh district on Tuesday evening was pulled out after nine hours but couldn’t be saved.
She was rescued at 2.40am and taken to hospital where she died around 5am despite frantic efforts to resuscitate her, reports Amarjeet Singh.
“She was alive and a faint ‘papa’ was heard when she was rescued. She was immediately rushed to a hospital in nearby Pachore, where doctors referred her to Bhopal’s Gandhi Medical College (100km away) after primary treatment. She died in Bhopal,” Boda police station in charge Ram Kumar Bhagat told TOI.
NDRF, SDRF and 4 JCB machines used in rescue op
The child, Mahie, lived in Patadiya village but was visiting her maternal uncle in Pipaliya Rasoda village, around 25km away. She was playing in his uncle’s farm when she fell into the borewell around 5.30pm on Tuesday.
Rescue operations started almost immediately. The child could be heard crying. She was believed to be stuck at a depth of 25 feet.
NDRF and SDRF teams were deployed and four JCB machines were used to dig a parallel trench. Sources said that a rope was dropped down the borewell and little Mahie held on to it twice but could not be pulled out as there was probably some obstruction. It wasn’t until 2.40am that rescuers could put their arms around the child and pull her out.
She was unconscious but breathing. Mahie was taken to two hospitals but couldn’t be saved.
“Every attempt was made. Oxygen was supplied, rescue was done in the quickest possible time and we even managed to get her out but unfortunately the child lost the battle for life,” said Bhagat. The borewell is owned by Inder Singh Bhilala, Mahie’s maternal grandfather, and the next course of action will follow after the case diary arrives from Bhopal, he added.
CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his grief and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family of the child.
